I'm back -Testing Completed!

First...damn I feel old!

When I walked in and registered for the test, I asked if I needed to use a pencil or a pen to take it.......I was imagining those fill in the bubble tests of the past .....the woman looked at me sideways and said, "You don't need anything, it's taken on the computer."

So then I wonder to myself if I would be allowed some scratch paper....I mean.."what the hell?"

So there I sat ...waiting....waiting....

Why I was early I will never know because I am NEVER early!

Stomach churning...twisting....palms sweaty....

First came the writing test.....we had to edit essays - Even though I am the "Queen of Typos" and my brain working faster than I can type....I felt confident but not too confident -

Then came the reading....we had to read passages and then answer questions....BORING...but easy.

Then....

Yes, then.................................

THE DREADED MATH!

Now...last night I did practice with their online sample test -->> Compass Math

I did good in the practice...aced the fractions, decimals and percentages...and even did semi OK on the algebra... I was no where near confident but I knew if I could ace the easy stuff, it would offset the algebra.

So...imagine my surprise (really, take a look at the sample test first) when the very first question was something like this -

"WHAT IN THE HELL IS THAT?????????????????"

"WHO IN THE HELL USES THIS IN THEIR EVERYDAY LIFE?"

Really....it's not like I was attempting to go to school to become some physicist.....give me a fuggin break!

So then I think I can just move forward to some easier ones, and go back to this one later...........

NOT!

Stupid damn computer test wouldn't let you do that, you had to answer them as they came on the screen............

"WHERE'S THE DAMN BUBBLE TEST????"

Was all I could think - at least with the bubble test I can make pretty patterns and still feel like I accomplished something!

My heart rate started to increase...........

I could feel my face getting red....................

I felt like I would lose my stomach at any moment...............

THIS WAS HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!

So...........

They say it's like riding a bike and you go back to when you first learned how...........

That being said, I did exactly what I would have done if I had been sitting in high school taking the same test...........

"Eeny, meeny, miny, moe...think I will choose number 4"

By the sixth question, pretty much same as the first (in a friggin FOREIGN LANGUAGE!)...my anxiety gave way to inner sarcasm and giggles................

Oh Well..................

I finished all my guessing, and completed the test......

I went up to the woman who was facilitating the testing, and waited for my little print out to tell me the scores............

All I could think was "Damn, I better have passed that reading and writing or else I need to quit the paper too!"

I mean how embarrassing would THAT be???

"Hey Betty (my editor) I flunked out on reading and writing, now why in the hell did you hire me?"

Well...........

Thankfully that call didn't have to be made....

I aced the reading and writing..scored 95% on both (Now I wanna know which question I got wrong because there has to be something wrong with that damn computer test!)

And then.....

there were the dreaded Math scores........

ew

ewwwww

ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

"Well, that's not pretty!"

No one needs to know the actual score--- I mean watch MSNBC if you want something depressing!

After the testing came the meeting with the counselor...

Naturally the first words out of my mouth were..

"What the hell is up with that math test..it's nothing like that damn practice test. What's with the false sense of security? HUH?"

She eased my worries, and told me "Everyone says that"

Whatever....

Still doesn't take that edge of disappointment off me...

Regardless, even though the math (if that's what you want to call the torture test) scores weren't the best, they will not prevent me from moving forward and starting classes this semester.

I just need to take one math class and grade a C average or better in it ...

That I know I can do...........

So anyway.......

There's my long update on the testing this morning...................

WHEW!

Orientation is Friday........................

Math!!! Forget life! I hated when I had to take statistics for my degree. I had a patient professor who for the life of him could not figure out how I came up with some of my answers.

You go girl......

History Shrouded in Mold - Part 1

Sipping my morning coffee I sit on my bed looking out almost century old windows and into the backyards of my neighbors. This morning was no different. The sky is grey and there is a slight chill in the air, reminding me that outside that glass is another world filled with life and adventure, stories to tell and lessons to be learned...knowledge to be gained. In other words, hope.  That sentiment brings back the emotions I felt as a little girl. Then, I sat on my bed looking out the massive Victorian era windows of the 3rd floor apartment we called home. It was in the mid 70s -Evanston, Illinois. I loved being able to see into the green of the trees that lined our street. Between the leaves and branches was another world playing out before my eyes. The birds, the squirrels and sometimes even a stray cat - they lived out a day in their life without ever knowing they had an audience taking in their story.  I would spend a lot of time watching them and getting to know their personalit

A Pay it Forward Christmas...

The Christmas Clues came all month long.....a month filled with constant motion ..chaos...stress...and deep inside me the usual holiday dread. Those clues helped to divert my attention away from the emptiness that has been in me for the last few years.... Those memories of a large family coming together where I was the hostess for all the holiday feasts....the memories that usually remind me of the last few years and how much the boys and I have lost when domestic violence entered our home...and what destruction it left in it's wake. Yes, the clues had me looking forward to time that in the last three years or so I would wish I could close my eyes around mid-November and wake up on Jan 1st - yes, me...the one time overly merry hostess had turned bitter towards the holidays. This is the first year in a very long time that I have actually looked forward to Christmas.... That Secret Santa...and those elves....must have known that I was dreading another Christmas...another holiday in

Propane - Shame on you Inergy!

I know this isn't a typical post for me, but I guess with me not much is typical. The last couple of weeks I've been spending a lot of time researching and learning about propane. Propane is something I never really thought about before because I never really used it - except, maybe, once in a great while for the gas grill rusting in my backyard. However, as I said, it's now a topic I have been spending my nights researching on the Net. The reason for this is because of a phone call I received a couple of weeks ago - the person on the other end of the phone told me that a company here in my area was about to charge $3.14 a gallon for propane, while all the others were running around $1.80 for a gallon. They explained that many people don't realize what was happening, and just how wrong they thought it all was. That call came in on a Tuesday morning, the week between Christmas and New Year's....a typically very slow news week, and one where at the paper (The Mes
